Since scooping the top GOLD award in the prestigious Entente Florale competition in 2008, Garstang has continued to uphold the exceedingly high standards that were expected by the panel of European judges. Their criteria required excellence in many different categories including: flora and vegetation, local environment, tourism impact and community participation.
It was an accolade that could be shared and celebrated by the whole community who every year continue to work so hard to make Garstang a wonderful place to live, work and visit.
GARSTANG IN BLOOM
However – it didn’t just start in 2008, Garstang has been participating in Britain in Bloom since 1987. From 1990 to the present day Garstang has been bringing home the certificates, trophies and gold medals. Over the years, local awards from the Northwest-in-Bloom, and National awards from Britain-in-Bloom have made the cabinet positively bulge!
These awards all recognise the town’s neighbourhood and community achievements, school participation, commercial input, and biodiversification projects. However, the success also speaks volumes about the sustained enthusiasm and support from the band of voluntary “bloomers” who can be regularly seen cleaning, pruning and litter picking “on the streets” of the town at all times of the year. The “bloomers” have, until recently, been ably led by Norah Hoyles MBE. She received a special individual RHS award in 2010 for all her community “championing”! However, Norah is now in the process of retiring and is currently handing over to Alan Pearson who has been able to restructure the business aspects of the Group and is trying to extend the appeal of Bloom to a wider audience. Continuing support from Commercial sponsors and Wyre Borough Council are also vitally important in keeping the town sparkling, and is very much appreciated by the Garstang in Bloom Steering Group.
Winning a top “Gold” again in the 2010 Britain-in-Bloom competition has given the town another opportunity to take part in the 2011 National “Champion of Champion’s”. Having been “pipped” at the post twice before (2006 and 2007) in this – the ultimate UK competition – you can be assured that Garstang will rise to the challenge in her usual way. This process will again involve the whole community working together as a partnership, and all ages, even the tots who attend pre-school will take part. People become involved because they are proud of Garstang. Continued success makes the town is a wonderful tourism attraction, and any National and International publicity – such as in the RHS “Bloom” and European Entente Florale competitions – certainly encourage many visitors to come to see for themselves what makes our attractive market town so special.
