Congratulations to Biddulph!

A great big thankyou and well done to the organisers of this year’s Arts Festival.

Another successful year, and a lot of hard work goes into making it such.

Special thanks must go to our Town Crier Hilary McGrath who organised a spectacular Town Crier Competition finale which was held in Cherestanc Square yesterday (Bank Holiday Monday)

Rain did not dampen the spirits of many town criers who came from all over the Northwest:-

Frank Barton – Carnforth
Mike Chapman – Proud Preston
Roland Hailwood – Clitheroe
Ken Knowles – Litchfield
Richard Mathews – Kendal
Eliza Mowe – Barnoldswick
John Parsons – Crier to lord of the manor of Rode (Staffs)
John Robinson – Biddulph
Terry Stubbins – Gainsborough
Vic Watson – Huddersfield
Brenda Willison – Bakewell

Professor James Dodding and was judging sustained volume and clarity. The overall winner was John Robinson from Biddulph who entertain the crowd with his amusing “cries”. Runner up was Eliza Mowe from Barnoldswick, Best dressed escort was Trish Stubbings wife of Terry Stubbings Gainsborough town crier who was placed 3rd,and best dressed couple were Richard and Barbara Mathews of Kendal. Mike Chapman crier of Proud Preston won Best Content of afternoon cry on Fairtrade. John Robinson also won the “best dressed” crier catagory.

Other judges were:-

Sue Hubbard- Diction and inflection, James Douglas – Confidence and bearing, Diana Douglas – accuracy, & Sandra Perkins – Best Dressed
Sue, Diana and Sandra are all members of Garstang Ladies speakers club and James Douglas is a member of Blackburn castle speakers club.

The criers had started the day by walking around the town…stopping along the way to ring their bells in unison. We were lucky to at least see sunshine for the morning’s procedures. In the afternoon, children were invited to “have a go” – ringing the bell, wearing the hat and shouting OYEZ! OYEZ! as loud as they could. All participants won a goodie bag!

It would be excellent if this event became a regular feature of the Arts Festival and thanks again to all those involved.
