Garstang’s Great War Heroes
Research, writing and editing are close to completion on the forthcoming book “Garstang’s Great War Heroes”, about the life, times and deaths of the 19 men listed on the Great War plaque of Garstang War Memorial. It is anticipated the book will be published late summer 2015.
As well as giving brief biographies of the town’s war dead the book also looks at the lives and experiences of many of the servicemen who returned to Garstang after the war, their lives never to be the same again.
There are also a series of historical appendices including one on the issue of how the 19 names were selected, one on the history of the war memorial from its original site above Garstang Market House to its move, circa 1952, to the “new” site on Park Hill Road. Another chapter will list all the other men with Garstang links who fell in the Great War while another looks at the still controversial topic of conscientious objectors, of whom there were at least two in the Garstang area during the Great War.
Copies will be given to the 1,400 pupils at the four schools in Garstang / Bonds / Lower Barnacre this autumn.
Limited numbers of the 94-page book, written by local historian Paul G Smith with assistance from Garstang Historical Society vice chairman Anthony Coppin, will be available for the public to buy (price yet to be fixed) with all proceeds going to armed forces charities.
* There is still time to become a sponsor. All donors who contribute £10 or more to the publication fund (c/o Garstang Historical Society) will have their names recorded in this important book which is certain to become a local classic and a keepsake for future generations of Garstonians.
Among the organisations which have contributed so far are Garstang Town Council, Garstang Lions, West Lancashire Freemasons Charity, Lancashire County Council, Garstang and Over Wyre Rotary Club. Commercial sponsors include Carrs Jewellers, J Chippendale Ltd., Garstang Dental Referral Practice and Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club.
There are currently about 30 individual sponsors, mainly Garstang residents, who have given amounts of between £10 and £100.
* More info about sponsoring the publication, donations towards its funding, etc., can be obtained from Anthony Coppin on 01995 605824 or 07884 255 955.
