Report of the annual meeting and Spring show of Garstang Gardening Club

GARSTANG Gardening club has had a blooming good year, members heard at the group’s recent annual meeting.
Chairman Ray Pearson reported a successful year with popular lectures, garden visits locally and nationally and the holding of two local shows.
Around 100 people attended the meeting at St Thomas’s parish hall, Garstang, where they heard about plans for the current year, which includes more lectures, shows and visits.
The 2011 garden visits include a three day trip to the gardens of Oxfordshire from July 5 to 7 (open to all, for more details contact June Gornall on 01995 602505).
Officials elected were: Chairman Ray Pearson, vice-chairman Hilary Hine, Treasurer Roger Broadbelt, Secretary Susan McDade, Programme Secretary Ruth Cowell, Press Secretary Anthony Coppin. Committee: Nancy Cowell, Pat Pickford, Don Worsnop and Bob Sutcliffe.
After the formal meeting the results were announced of the Spring show judging, held earlier in the evening.
Judges praised the efforts of the plantsmen and women. Prizes were presented by club president Ben Andrews and chairman Ray Pearson.
Class 1. Three club daffodil bulbs: 1 Ben Andrews, 2 Dorothy Huxley, 3 Joyce Meiring.
Class 2. Miniature daffodils in a pot: 1 and 2 Peter Wiseman, 3 Bob Sutcliffe.
Class 3. Any other spring bulbs: 1 Richard Kellett, 2 Ben Andrews.
Class 4. Three standard daffodils/cut stems in vase: 1 Chris Sutcliffe, 2 Bob Sutcliffe, 3 Margaret Worsnop.
Class 5. Three miniature daffodils/cut stems in a vase: 1 Gladys Bradshaw, 2 Pat Collins, 3 Nancy Cowell
Class 6. Spring arrangement / flowers and foliage: 1 Ben Andrews, 2. Karen Ogden, 3 Peter Wiseman
Class 7. Helibore cut bloom / flower head: 1 Nancy Cowell, 2 and 3 Janet Sharp.
* The next meeting of Garstang Gardening Club takes place at St Thomas’s Hall on Monday, April 11, at 7.30pm when John Henshaw will give a talk on cacti and succulents.
* The summer show will be held on Saturday, September 3 (more details will appear on this site nearer the time).
* The first meeting of the 2011/12 season will be on September 12 when Colin Dickinson will speak on Victorian Gardens (venue, the new St Thomas’s hall, if completed. Otherwise the old hall).
