Yes! Garstang have achieved the HAT TRICK!
GARSTANG HAS ATTAINED A TOP RATING OF 5 IN THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM COMPETITION!
A phone call from Norah Hoyles MBE confirmed that GARSTANG really is a global champion!! The highest score of 5 was gained and a special mention was given for our “Youth Engagement in Environmental Issues”. Norah said they were “absolutely delighted” with the news, and added the Canadian contingency of bloomers have had a wonderful time in Quebec.
Bloomers at home were also quietly(!)celebrating in Th’Owd Tithebarn and the Wheatsheaf pubs…both of whom have given so much support to the Garstang in Bloom team. The news came via the Wheatsheaf telephone just after 11pm last night (29th October)
You can see all the results here: http://www.communitiesinbloom.ca
At the time of writing Radio Lancashire was also covering the story – hoping to have a live interview with bloomers in Quebec, and those at home. You will be able to “listen again” on the BBC Radio Lancashire website. Stephen Lowe’s Sunday morning show “Lancashire Outdoors”
Well done to all concerned, and a great big thankyou to everyone who helped during all visits by the Judges – Regional, National and International!
Thanks to Garstang’s community too!
NORTH WEST IN BLOOM
Garstang has picked up another GOLD in the RHS North West in Bloom award ceremony held in Southport on 20th October. Amongst other winners were residents of Stransdale, Walmesley Close, and the boating community at the Tithebarn basin. They all picked up an award at the “Neighbourhood” award ceremony on Wednesday. WELL DONE TO ALL AGAIN!
NATIONAL BRITAIN IN BLOOM
A previous award ceremony was held in St Andrews on 25th September, and Garstang achieved yet another Gold award in the National RHS Britain in Bloom competition – being only just pipped to the post by Cricklade for overall Champion of Champions. Although they didn’t win the catagory – Garstang local businesses were nominated for a special discretionary award – a major accolade to be nominated…and well deserved!

BACKGROUND TO JUDGES VISITS
Garstang in Bloom has had a very busy year.
Three lots of judges through July & August – Northwest in Bloom & the National Champion of Champions from the Royal Horticultural Society, and the International Judges from “Communities in Bloom” based in Canada.
The town was sparkling as usual – and we managed one sunny day for the North West in Bloom Judges in July. However the National and International judges had to face our inclement August weather. With true “blooming” spirit – we entertained the Judges and showed off our flowers, our pocket gardens, our schools and of course our wonderful “community”.
Alex and Berta, the judges from Ohio & Alberta (respectively) could not have failed to be impress with the town as a whole. Bertha was heard to say that we “had ticked every box!”
The first result will be the RHS “Champion of Champions” which will be announced in St Andrews Scotland on Sunday 25th September, followed by the North West in Bloom which will be announced at Southport on Thursday 20th October. The final result for the International Challenge will be heard in Quebec on Saturday 29th October. Those bloomers not going to Canada will hopefully be celebrating in the Wheatsheaf on the Saturday evening where they expect to hear the result at around 11pm (6pm Quebec time)
Our grateful thanks go to all those who helped to make August 8th very special – the boating community & Carole and Robert at Th’Owd Tithebarn, the schools & Children’s Centre, Bridgehouse Marina and Jungle Queen, The Millennium Green Team, Fairtrade reps & Soroptomists, Wyre Rangers, Garstang Cycling Club, Visit Wyre Centre, businesses, pubs, residents and of course “bloomers”! Of course the summer was marred greatly by the sad and sudden loss of Henry Hoyles. He played such a massive but silent part in helping keep Garstang looking as good as it does. He will be sadly missed by us all.
The bloomer’s work goes on throughout the year, not just for judgement days, and we are always glad of any extra help.
PLEASE HELP US IF YOU CAN – EVEN IF YOU JUST CONTINUE TO WEED AND LITTERPICK OUTSIDE YOUR OWN FRONT DOOR.
